THE BISHOP is Steven James' fourth thriller to feature FBI special agent Patrick Bowers. It once again reinforces my belief that James is easily one of the best writers out there, whether Christian books or not. He's comparable with the best. THE BISHOP had me making time to read, even if it was a few pages at a time. James juggles several plot lines, all of them satisfying to a degree, all of them suspenseful.
This is the fourth book in the series, and it is probably best that you read the other three first, but you don't have to. Fresh off his case in Colorado , Bowers and step-daughter Tessa have returned to DC where Patrick will teach a class at the FBI Academy . While there, he's drawn into a case that have all the bigwigs involved. A congressman's daughter has been murdered.
What is great: So many plotlines going, some payoff better than others, but some go even deeper into relationships that you thought had gone as far as they can go (Patrick and boss Margeret Wellington). Tessa's relationship with the father she never new is also very good. Most great novels like this have great villains, and Brad and Astrid are no exception. The opening prologue where they frame an innocent man is captivating and shows just how twisted they are. But probably the best relationship is between Patrick and Tessa. They've really grown close and its fun to watch.
The not so good: James is an exceptional writer with a great imagination, but he has a strong tendency to carry over characters from previous novels. I don't want to spoil anything except to say that many characters, including villains, return from previous novels. In my opinion, James has the talent and the novel would be better if he offered something fresh in each novel. The reliance on past villains is what keeps this book from deserving SIX stars. Also, there is a lot of philosophy espoused in the second half of the book that doesn't really lead anywhere.
However, the above flaws don't take away from the praise I've given this novel. James is one of the best, and I can't wait for his next novel. I just wish he would recycle villains.

I began this book in a flurry of anticipation--fresh off the reader's high I got from the first book in this series, Vampire Academy--and found book 2 to be another solid, solid YA read. (Score!)
Now that all the character intros are out of the way, this book is allowed to focus on world-building, particularly on the Strigoi threat, which was alluded to in VA, but not really explored. Rose and Dimitri are sent on a training mission, but when they arrive at their destination, they find a house full of murdered Moroi royals and their world-class dhampir guards. The massacre happened during the day and since Strigoi cannot bear the sunlight, this means that they had human help to get at the family. After another large-scale slaying, the whole Moroi/dhampir community is bristling with fear and anger. The students of St. Vladimir's are sequestered at an ultra-protected ski resort during winter break, and most of the aristocracy also shows up, to hold council about how to deal with the unprecedented threat from the Strigoi.
Rose has her own issues, as per usual. She still carries a Statue-of-Liberty-size torch for Dimitri, who keeps his distance from her and seems to be interested in Tasha Ozera, a beautiful, fierce royal who happens to be Christian's aunt and the scarred survivor of a Strigoi attack. No matter how much Tasha shows her preference for Dimitri or how much he seems to reciprocate, Rose can't hate Tasha because she's possibly the coolest royal in existence--she's a martial artist who openly derides the Moroi for hiding behind their dhampir guardians and she advocates the use of offensive magic.
Then there's Rose's sweet and witty friend Mason who isn't bothering to hide his interest in her (especially after she lets their relationship go beyond just-friends boundaries), and the fact that she rarely sees her beloved friend Lissa since Lissa spends most of her time with her boyfriend, Christian. Icing on the awful-cake: Rose's mom shows up, which makes Rose's mommy issues threaten to come to a boil.
I've already come to expect extensive personal drama and plenty of great action from the VA series, and Frostbite delivers. It's more emotionally grueling than the first installment, but it pays great dividends, too. Rose matures a great deal, one-note characters like Mia get to show a different side, and all the plot threads are advanced by the novel's conclusion--nobody's in exactly the same place.
The addition of the new character Adrian Ivashkov is intriguing. Rose is inexplicably drawn to him, though not in a romantic way, she has a conversation with him in a dream, and worries over all the questions he's asking about Lissa. This guy has Significant Side-Character written all over him, and I can't wait to see how he'll behave in the next book.
There's not a lot of Lissa in Frostbite, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Even on her best day, Lissa is just not quite as interesting as Rose, but Rose's psychic link with her allowed for a handy second POV in VA, which is almost absent here. It limits the narrative a bit to only have Rose's eye-witness POV, but it also spares the reader because Lissa spends most of her time thinking lovey thoughts about her boyfriend, which is mostly dull. But we do learn more about her spirit power, which is always interesting. Remember the old Captain Planet cartoon show? All the kids had these great dramatic elemental powers and then there was the one kid who got stuck with having the power of Heart. But Lissa's spirit power is truly boss, and will only get more awesome as time passes.
A note on my pet character: though Dimitri is fantastic, Christian Ozera is my favorite guy in this series, at least when he's not being cutesy couple-y with Lissa. Why is it that they were exciting to read about when they were geting together, but it's mostly uninteresting to see them as a happy couple? Question for the ages, right there. Rose has to team up with Christian in a crisis situation, and that works out tremendously. Rose rocks my socks, and when she works together with Christian and I see the possibility that they could become troublemaking buddies--run in fear, all ye Strigoi.
Flaws? None I'm noticing at the moment. Nice, twisty story + character development + advanced plot = even better than then first book!

This book is easier to navigat then others that I have checked out. The beginning of the book is a lot of information on the muscles themselves. . .names, types, etc. I read it in an evening and found it interesting enough. There'a a short section on diet, and then a detailed description of the exercises with pictures. This is VERY helpfull when trying new things like the thin stomach. Sounds strange, but believe me, if you try to do ten or twelve, you'll learn to respect it. After that comes the workout schedules in detail. It's quite different from the way I was used to working out. Triceps and biceps on the same day? He advocates working opposing muscles on the same day. Seemed a strange idea, but hey, it works. Also there's the use of tempo, 278. That's lower the weight for three seconds, rest for two, then lift for one (basically as fast as you can. Try a bench press with a 613 tempo for a few reps. I went to the doctor for a yearly physical (the first in a long time), and found out my cholesterol and blood presure were high. I really didn't want to start taking drugs, so decided to get back in shape. To make a long story short, this book has a detailed work out plan that helped me to drop my cholesterol from 230 to 229 in about fourteen weeks. The workouts have to be a part of a generaly healthfull life style. You have to eat right, and get a little cardio in as well. I do find it extreamly helpfull that this book presents a schedule to follow, and changes every three weeks. The workouts are separated into beginner intermidiate and advanced, each lasting about six months with rest weeks recommended at periodic intervals. I started with the intermidiate level and found it challenging but doable. Each workout (three different workouts done once per week) takes me a little over an hour.

My 8 month old daughter is at the very least entertained if not smiling and laughing when we read this book to her. "One dog. WOOF" "Two dogs. WOOF, YAP YAP" - each dog has it's own bark, but they give you a few breaks so you're not barking the whole time - eg. "Six quiet dogs." Usually when I read books to her they can have only a couple words per page or else she gets itchy because I'm lingering on each page for too long, but with this book she'll even sit through the last page where you go through the barking of all ten dogs. I'm sure this is also great for when toddlers are learning how to count.
Effect::: Delightful cumulative rhyme leads up to the consequences of piling too many sleepy people and animals in a cozy bed. Don Wood s paintings endow Audrey s familiar plot with beauty and newness, conveying atmosphere as well as illustrating the story. --Publishers Weekly User friendly.
This book is repetitive, which is great for my 2 year old. It is somewhat calming in that way. At first i didn't care for this book, I thought it could have been more exciting...but it has grown on me & is a part of our nightly bedtime routine. My son loves the last page when they are outside playing under the rainbow, so if he runs away when i am reading the first part, he always rushes back to see the last page.

Hide in Plain Sight (Three Sisters Inn, Book 1)Feature for this item
This novel was an easy, light read for times when you don't really want a lot of action, suspense, or thought-provoking moments. There were enough clues to keep the reader guessing, and the plot moved along at a good pace so I never got bored. I would say that I guessed half of the ending as far as the "who dunnit" aspect without really trying, but there was still a surprising twist that I didn't foresee. The Amish undertones are very subtle--this certainly isn't a book that will teach you a lot about the fascinating people or their way of life. The Christian aspect is present, but is much lighter than I've found in other novels labeled "Christian Fiction". It is unmistakeable, however, so if you find that distracting this is not the book for you.
And as a Christian novel the romance is very chaste. It was a quick read and pretty much delivered what I'd expected given the genre. If it is still available as a freebie for Kindle owners I'd rec. it if your tastes are similar.

I am an 11-year-old girl who absolutely hated reading. I could never find a book I liked. If I actually found a good book, I would end up getting bored with it and not finishing it. Then, I happened to stumble upon "Percy." I opened up this book, and I never put it down. I read all day long, while eating dinner, while brushing my teeth, and even read it by flashlight in bed. I finished the series in less than two weeks. I cried so hard when I was finished with the last book. I was literally sick to my stomach and had a headache. I was bedstricken, okay???!! Then, I found out Rick Riordan would be writing a new "Percy" series, featuring some of the old characters. I have no reason to live until "The Lost Hero" comes out. (October 12th.) This is coming from a girl who, 2 weeks before "Percy", wouldn't even read a picture book. Rick Riordan, you are amazing. This author knows what his mythology-loving audience wants to read. And I will be reading Rick's work as long as I can possibly stand it!!!!!!!

My son is almost 2 years old; I got this for him for Christmas and he loves it. He loves to point at the machines and let us tell him what it is. Then we also reverse it; we ask him to locate the motorcycle, bus, etc. It has pictures of just about every machine you see. I think this says it's for ages 4-8; I'd say that's wrong and younger kids will like it. I would think older kids would want a story line, and there is no story.
This was the first recipe book that I bought on juicing, and I really enjoy it. It gives a great and easy to understand introduction on juicing and why it is so beneficial. Another great point of the book is the star ratings based on skin, immunity, energy, etc. The back of the book even gives lists of ailments and then tells you corresponding recipes that are good to alleviate the symptoms.
The only downside to this book is it is mostly fruit and doesn't have many vegetable juicing recipes. Carrots are used, but for the main ingredients there isn't celery, spinach, parsley, etc. If you're looking for an introduction to juicing and want to get into it slowly, I would recommend starting with this because the fruit mixtures are great and tasty and then you mix a little carrot in them and as you continue, experiment and include more vegetables.

This is my kind of mystery, family secrets and murder to keep them secret. Harper can find dead bodies and when she "touches" them she can tell what happened in their last minutes of life. She got this talent after being struck by lightening, you find out later she was using a curling iron to do her hair before she went out on a date and the lightening entered thru the open window beside her. Harper is scared of storms, who wouldn't be in her shoes, but the books make you wonder if it isn't because she's afraid if she is hit again that she will lose her talent and gain something worse. Harper's second is her step-brother Tolliver. Here they are the yin to the other's yang. Harper is a bit high-strung while Tolliver is cool calm and collected. She seems to be startled by every pothole she hits in life while he just lets it roll off his back. And unlike other reviews I really didn't see any romantic or sexual tension between them, but then again I wasn't looking for it either. This book took me on a rollercoaster ride with me hanging on by the seat of my pants, and I loved every minute. I don't know about you but it kept me guessing about who had done the murder until the very end.

I don't generally do vampire and werewolf novels because most of them are dumb. They're almost always formulaic, repetitive, and unimaginative, just another helping of gothic romance and '30s Hollywood script. There are a very few exceptions, like Kim Harrison's "Rachel Morgan" series, and now this one. Kitty Norville is a nice Denver girl in her early '20s, and a werewolf. She's also a disc jockey and the best known public authority (after testifying before a Congressional committee) on lycanthropy. By the time of this fourth novel, she has managed to escape her battered existence at the hands/paws of Carl, her pack's alpha, fled to Pueblo, and established a two-person pack of her own. She has also found a few vampires she can trust to be her friends. (Hey, they're all people.) But now the situation in her city is changing. The Master vampire seems no longer to be able to control his people and has recruited Carl to help him. Rick, a Good Guy vampire (sort of), decides it's time for a new Master and that Kitty will have to replace Carl in the process. It's a complicated plot and if you haven't read the first three volumes you'll have some trouble figuring out what's going on because the back-story is kind of thin. Vaughn's take on the whole undead, shape-shifting thing shows a lot of originality and she does a very good job building the story around the politics of power and control. An above-average series.

There were horses and sheep and goats and geese--and a jaunty old scarecrow leaning on his hoe. And they all lived together by the big red barn. In joyous and exuberant pictures, Felicia Bond lovingly evokes Margarett Wise Brown's simple, rhythmic text about the cycle of a day on a farm, where a family of animals peacefully plays and sleeps.
"Brown's melodic text is beguiling, while its subject'the big red barn that houses a menagerie of animals and their offspring'will have instant appeal to young children. Bond's newly added drawings have a simplicity that suits the story [about the cycle of a day on a farm]. A welcome reprise." 'BL.
Big Red Barn is one of those baby books that provokes either charm or annoyance in adult readers, and delight in young listeners. It is marked by Brown's soothingly rhythmic, repetitive text, sprinkled with farmyard animal noises that toddlers will love to imitate. The story opens with "a pink pig/ who was learning to squeal" greeting the sunrise. Other farm animals go about their activities throughout the day, and (just as in Goodnight Moon) the pictures become progressively darker as night falls on the barn.
This classic board book is brightly illustrated, interactive and soothing. It's a good fit for both preverbal toddlers and children who are just beginning to understand how story events progress in sequence. It's a very nice choice for both boys and girls.
