I finally got this book after the deadline and the company was nice enough to credit my account. I enjoyed the book as I have enjoyed the other Drake Sisters books. It's a very fast read, story and characters could have been developed a lot more, but it was okay. I think Christine Feehan's books are slowly evolving into a better read. I really enjoyed her latest book Dark Hunter. I wish she would find another way to write her sex scenes or leave them out and let the reader's imagination take over.

I love the infatuation period of falling in love with a new book series. Getting to know the characters, gaining familiarity with the writer's style, navigating around the new "world" of the story... it's all lots of fun.

It doesn't always work out in the end, but in the case of Vampire Academy, I was quickly sure that author Richelle Mead and I were at the start of a beautiful relationship. (The fact that my rarely-wrong bestie recommended the series didn't hurt this opinion, either.)

In my humble opinion, the most lackluster thing about this series is its name. Not only does it brand it squarely in the "academy" age bracket -- limiting its audience -- the cheesy cover art doesn't help matters much.

I think many 20-something and older readers -- like me -- will enjoy Mead's writing and her likeable characters. The action is good, but plot is still somewhat original, even in the crowded YA field and the love story is smoldering without being smutty. It would be a shame to limit all this "goodness" to a high school audience, so I hope more seasoned readers aren't scared of by the title. There is more here than superficial teenage vampire fluff. Truly.

Mead does a great job of introducing central character Rose and her best friend, Lissa. The tie between the two girls is powerful and believable, and I enjoyed the voice of both very much. I look forward to following their story through the rest of the series. More importantly, Rose is not a "Mary Jane" heroine. She makes mistakes and bad choices, often without apology. She has normal, adolescent hormones and hangups. She just happens to also be a kick-ass vampire guardian in training (called a dhampir, in this series). She's a smart, sassy character that brings a lot of "girl power" to the genre without trying to be a role model. It's refreshing.

Vampire Academy effectively sets up not only a modest hurdle for the characters to overcome in book one, but also the large, overarching threat the characters will likely deal with for the rest of the series. Budding romances are introduced. Social tensions are revealed, both in the microcosm of the academy and in the large-scale political world the characters live in. All in all, it's a great book.

I very much look forward to reading the other books in the series, and following Rose and Lissa on their next dangerous adventure.

You don't read a book like this to your kid, you give it to your kid and let him go off and read it himself and ask you questions later if he wants. My mom got me this book when I was a lad and I read it cover to cover. It was exactly what I needed.

I remember this part of my life well, so let me give you a little advice. Boys entering this part of their lives are best given a book like this and then LEFT ALONE to read it on their own terms. DON'T be overbearing and try to have some long-winded discussion with him about sexual topics. Trust me, he will get embarrassed and then he will hate you for prying into something that he needs to figure out separately from you (with the help of this book, which is great. In fact, I would think about getting him more than one book. Something on relationships, perhaps, when he's a few years older.) If you overstep your bounds, he will just think, "God, this is so terrible. I wish this horrible awkward train-wreck of a conversation was over already." Then he'll tune you out, defeating the purpose of the conversation and replacing it with awkwardness and resentment. If you have to give him "The Talk," just keep it REALLY BRIEF, and hand them this book at the end of it.

By picking up some education on the subject from this author, he's getting it from someone who is a disinterested third party, someone whose expectations he doesn't have to live up to, et cetera. The person who wrote this book isn't going to read over his shoulder about things that he naturally finds embarrassing. It's a safe environment. If your boy is reading this book by himself, he doesn't have to worry about being judged. He doesn't have to keep his guard up, or worry about any social considerations. He doesn't have to demure to the author because he doesn't want to hurt the author's feelings. See how perfect it is? It's the best possible way for him to learn about this. Just make it clear that you're giving him space on this issue, and that you will answer any questions he has. Obviously you don't want to turn him loose on the world without supervision, but this is one of those cases where it will greatly benefit him to know that he has the time and space to figure this out on his own. If he wants to know something, and he knows he can ask you about it without it turning into a big obnoxious lecture, he'll be more likely to ask.

You want to give him some advice? Tell him to stay away from attention whores and crazies, and not to invest his entire happiness into whether some other person loves him or not. You'll be doing him a huge favor.

I used this book 4 years ago to write a book proposal for my book of technical mysteries, "If I Only Changed the Software, Why is the Phone on Fire?"

As I'd never written a book before, but I had extensive writing experience, I needed guidance on the mechanics of the proposal. This book does a great job of listing the different sections needed in a clear manner. It also includes recommendations on how to phrase information for clear readability.

There are many books on the market to help with proposals, and I used several in my research - this was a good one. It must have been useful, because I received two contracts within a couple months of my releasing the proposal. My book was published in 2007 and is available here on Amazon at the link below.
